SINGAPORE’S TROOPS TO TRAIN IN INDIA

UNDER a long-term agreement signed here on October 9th, Singapore will send its high-tech armed forces to India for training.

An Indian Defense Ministry official said the pact will provide Singapore, which lacks space for large-scale military exercises, with facilities to hold exercises in India.

The agreement will further existing defense ties between the two countries, making Singapore an important part of India’s strategic ties in the Indian Ocean region, Defense Ministry officials here said. Indian Defense Secretary Vijay Singh and Chiang Chie Foo, Singapore’s Permanent Secretary for Defense, signed the accord at the beginning of the two-day 4th India-Singapore Defense Policy Dialogue meeting in New Delhi.

The militaries of India and Singapore have held several joint land, air and sea exercises since 1991. In September, both countries’ navies, along with those of Australia, Japan and the U.S., took part in a large joint exercise in the Indian Ocean.
