ON the 24th and 25th September, 2007, former President James R. Mancham was on a high-profile visit to Salt Lake City, capital of the State of Utah in the USA, where he spoke to students at the Hinckley Institute of the University of Utah as well to Utah's VIPs community at the famous Alta Club of Salt Lake City and to graduates at the Westminster College on three major themes - “The Creation of an Island Nation,” “The Political and Economic Implications of China's Growing Influence in Africa” and “American Leadership at a Time of Global Crisis.”
Here are some samples from the many comments received.
From Jan Saeed - Director of Spiritual Life at Westminster College: “.....I feel the more we listen to the concerns of all the people of this planet we call home, the better we will be able to make informed decisions. It is impossible to know what path is best for the people of other countries without listening to many voices. And to listen is not enough. Once our consciousness has been raised, it is our responsibility as fellow brothers and sisters of this one homeland, earth, to help create awareness for greater global consciousness for others, until the concerns and needs of all people are attended to in a fashion that would be seen as kind and loving, as one would wish for their own family. I commend your efforts to increase this global awareness and alliances. I have heard many good things about the beauty of your country and its people. I hope that some day I may be able to see with my own eyes your part of the world. Meanwhile, thank you for all your efforts to promote world peace and increase global understanding.”
From J.H. Alt - Dean of the College of Social and Behavioural Science of the University of Utah: “…..Sir James, it was an honour and pleasure to have you as our guest last week. We are indebted to Ambassador Price for making you available to us, and to you for sharing your insights thoughts and your wonderful sense of humour. We look forward to seeing you again.”
From Laura Dupuy - Executive Director Utah Council for Citizens Diplomacy: “…..I can't tell you what a pleasure and honour it was to meet you. Your address was very thought-provoking and insightful. Indeed Tuesday evening was a great success, and I have had many phone calls from my members thanking me for this extraordinary opportunity. We will always remember your visit and the wonderful work that you are doing globally to help the world find the peace that we all dream of.”
From David B. Winder - Retired U.S. Diplomat: “…..I enjoyed meeting you at Westminster College. The USA needs a wake-up call on your message. ……Two nights ago, I sat at the same dinner table with Fareed Zakaria in Dallas and participated in extensive conversation with him. He is the editor of 'Newsweek International' and would be very interested in what you have to say.”
From Jayne H. Nelson - Assistant Director - Hinckley Institute of Politics: “…..Your presentation at the Hinckley Institute of Politics was outstanding…”
From Dinesh Patel Ph.D. - Managing Director of Spring Capital, Financier: “.....The discussion with you was very lively and informative. As I mentioned I have recently visited Zambia. The influence of China was self-evident. China has invested billions of dollars in Zambia (mining, manufacturing, farming). The investment has been controversial with the opposition accusing the government of selling out to China. However, according to President Mwanawasa, Zambia turned to the East because the West let Zambia down. This is another example of your point that America and the West have not paid enough attention to Africa.”
It is to be noted that President Mancham was guest of former US Ambassador to Seychelles and Mauritius, Mr John Price who is a proven business leader and a committee member of the Salt Lake City community.
