AS we enter 2008, we are aware more than ever of our position as a small island state in a globalised world. We are facing many challenges; but there are also opportunities that present themselves. We are linked to the world in ways that were unimaginable 30 years ago.
Amidst the benefits and challenges, we are a nation well-versed in adaptation. We are a compassionate and caring nation always prepared to defend our values and traditions while at the same time maintaining an open outlook to the rest of the world and positive cha
nge.
Particularly at this juncture where we stand on the threshold of many achievements, it is important that we preserve our values of neighborliness and mutual help that characterize our communities. We must increase our efforts in our fight against substance abuse. We cannot allow illegal drugs and alcohol to destroy our dreams, threaten our development and security as a nation and steal a promising future from our children.
It is important that we pull in the same direction, united in our purpose to safeguard our achievements and build a strong and healthy generation. The time to fight is now!
As we develop, as we climb further hills and mountains; let us always be prepared to create and innovate to ensure that we are not left behind. Let us also always continue to protect, preserve and shelter against that which can harm us.
