IN a recent Press Release from Glacis-sur-Mer announced that former President James R. Man-cham, as a member of the Presi-ding Council of the Universal Peace Federation, was a guest of honour at the World Culture and Sports Festival, which took place between the 3rd and 9th of July 2007 in Seoul, Korea.
The World Culture and Sports Festival, which was initiated in 1988, is dedica-ted to the establi-shment of “A World Culture of Heart,” and consist of several components – (i) Interreli-gious Peace Sports Festival, which brings together over 2000 athletes representing more than 50 Nations and all major faith traditions, to compete in athletic events ranging from track and field to tennis, basketball, football and other games centered on universal values – (ii) The World Peace Blessing, which brings together couples from more than 100 Nations to celebrate the social, moral and sacred value of marri-age and family, and receive God’s Blessing in a joyous and spiritual celebration – (iii) The World Uni-versity Students Assembly, which brings together students from uni-versities around the world who are “College Ambassadors for Peace” – (iv) Culture and Arts Programs – a variety of cultural and interna-tional performing arts programs and (v) The Mr and Miss Universi-ty Pageant, which brings together young men and women who have been selected to participate in a “beauty pageant” that focuses on attributes of talent, character and service more than external physi-cal beauty.
Former President Mancham who is President of the Global Peace Council of the UPF, is one of the fifteen members of the UPF’s Presiding Council. The others are – Rev. Dr. C.H. Pierre Nkurunziza (President, Burundi), Senator Larry Pressler (Former Senator, United States of America), H.E. Stanislav Shush-kevich (Former President, Bela-rus), Hon. Laxmi Mall Singhvi (Senior Advocate, Supreme Court India) and H.E. Johnson Toribiong (Ambassador of Palau to Taiwan).
It is to be noted that the Universal Peace Federation, through its association with the Interreligious and International Federation for World Peace, is an NGO in special consultative status with the economic and social council of the United Nations.
